“An unlimited amount of ability can develop when parent and child are having fun together.”
-Shinichi Suzuki
Typically in the Suzuki Method, a parent accompanies the student to lessons to take notes and better know how to help them practice during the week. This is not required; however, it is preferable. More serious students should consider this as it provides for better and quicker learning.
- A notebook and pencil may be required for the teacher or parent to take notes on. OR, if preferred, the teacher will provide a lesson chart to take notes on in google docs that will be filled out by the teacher during lesson each week.
- You will be expected to be 5 minutes early to set up and tune.
- You must provide your own instrument along with rosin, a bow, and a shoulder rest (limited instruments are available for monthly rental).
- You must provide your own books for lessons (required books are listed under curriculum for students under their appropriate skill level).
- You will be expected to purchase certain books such as I Love to Read Music, Kreutzer 42 studies, and Carl Fleisch Scales book for exercises like sight reading, rhythms, left and right hand technique, etc. See Curriculum for all of the required materials.
- If a parent is attending they are highly encouraged to read Nurtured by Love by Schinichi Suzuki.
- If a sibling is attending they must not be a distraction and must stay in the designated lesson area. They are encouraged to bring things to keep them occupied such as a book, homework, etc.
- Half book recitals are encouraged and end of book recitals are required for Suzuki students.
- Taking orchestra is highly encouraged because it develops other essential skills in music that are not always focused on in solo work and can even encourage faster learning; again, however, it is not required.
- We will not make students keep practice logs; however, they are expected to practice 5-6 days a week (lessons do not count). We realize that this is not always practical and emergencies, sickness, vacations, and other abnormalities in scheduling may justify exceptions.
Practice
The following practice times are recommended for the different skill levels of students:
- Beginners (books 1-2): 15-30 minutes a day
- Intermediate (books 3-7): 1-2.5 hours a day
- Advanced (books 8-10/concertos): 2.5-5 hours a day
